Gilbert is way more interesting and fun than Almanzo. Almanzo's family had better food, but I wouldn't want to be the one who had to prepare all of it.
Anyway, Gilbert's a doctor. He probably performs surgery on the kitchen table. Never a dull moment, I bet.
Gilbert, without a contest. I can barely remember Almanzo, which does not bode well for his romantic prospects with me. Plus Gilbert had that smart and cocky thing going on.
I don't know ladies. I am re-reading the later LIW books right now, and Almanzo is pretty amazing. He's so masculine! And he took Laura to singing school. I love Gilbert, but he just seems a little wimpy in comparison, with his poetry and typhoid. Perhaps I'm just getting old--I appreciate a hardworking farm boy more now.
Gilbert is a writer AND a doctor, and Anne's love saved him from dying of typhoid. He's not wimpy, he's a renaissance man. He gave up his teaching position so that Anne could have it and stay with Marilla after Matthew died! Plus, Canadian accent. I rest my case.
Of course, the attraction to Gilbert is inevitable. His endearing way of telling Anne he's "sory" and his dashing adventures in Europe. However, Almanzo is the sweetest, most adorably confused man in Walnut Grove (with Mr. Edwards at a close second). And, dare I say, Almanzo is the handsomest! He doesn't pretend to be any smarter than any other man, but his hilarious encounters with Charles seals the deal. I'd rather be Laura any day, and have the robust Almanzo as a husband and family in Walnut Grove; than Anne, having to deal with the war and wondering if Gilbert will live. No bashing Gilbert, though, they're both above par as far as most literary men go!

ReplyDeleteIt's pretty close, but Gilbert. I want a boy who can talk poetry with me and will join an improvement society for my sake!
